Welcome to Rivendell Gypsies! We are a small farm located in Harriman, Tennessee dedicated to raising some of the finest Gypsy Vanner horses available in this country. We believe in quality, not quantity, and as a result, raise only 2 Gypsy Vanner foals per year. Our mission is to honor the vision of the original Gypsy breeders in England and Ireland, and perpetuate, through our breeding program, those special qualities that immediately enamored us to this breed.

More specifically:
  • Flashy coloring and markings
  • Heavy, luxurious feathering
  • Thick, long mane and tail
  • A sweet and refined head
  • Neck arched at the top
  • Short coupled back
  • Well-rounded hind quarters i.e. "an apple butt"
  • Heavy boned
  • Docile temperament, as well as strong, intelligent and athletic
  • Between 14 and 15 hands in height as measured at the withers

  • Please refer to our Breed Standards page for a fully developed discussion of the 7 points of conformation.

Our extensive research into the Gypsy Vanner breed lead us to the selection of 2 very fine quality mares for our breeding program: Clononeen Chriona, imported from Ireland in 2005, and Mrs. Montivea, imported from England in 2006. We feel that our two mares are wonderful examples of the original vision for the breed.

We originally considered owning a Gypsy stallion to stand at stud, but made a personal choice not to, because we feel that there are already many fine Gypsy stallions in the US that are very worthy to pass on their exceptional qualities. Rather, we decided to dedicate all of our efforts to raising and selling 2 exceptional foals per year. In this regard, we select for breeding only those stallions that meet the original vision of the Gypsy breeders, and who we feel will complement and add to the qualities contributed by our mares.

When you purchase a foal from us you can be sure that the foal has been handled on a daily basis; is comfortable with wearing a halter, being tied and lead; has had his or her feet picked up on a regular basis; has been bathed and clipped; and is comfortable being trailered. Our foals are also exposed to many distractions including tractors, donkeys and of course our 9 dogs! We treat them as members of our family, and only sell to approved homes that will care for them in the manner that they have become accustomed :-)
